Als ich das Veilchen heut gefragt,
ob jetzt im Lenz kein Morgen tagt,
wo Gram und Leid mir ganz vergeh'n,
da hat's mich traurig angeseh'n. |
When I asked the violet today
If there would be no dawn now in spring,
When all grief and pain would part from me,
It sadly looked at me. |
Und als ich dann die Frage tat,
ob dieser Morgen nicht mir naht,
wenn einst der nächste Lenz erscheint,
da hat sein Köpfchen es verneint. |
And when I then asked
Whether such a dawn would not come for me
With the arrival of the next spring,
Its little head said: No. |
Und als ich endlich, halb verzagt,
das Veilchen noch zu letzt gefragt,
ob mir der Schmerz denn niemals schweigt,
da hat es sich hinabgeneigt. |
And when finally, almost crestfallen,
I asked the violet at last
Whether the my pain would never be silent,
It bowed low. |
