Time and place of this composition for the piano are unknown. Although there are no lyrics in the sketch, it may have been conceived as Lied. Rott may have thought of the scene which begins with: "Zum Werke, das wir ernst bereiten" ("For the work that we prepare in earnest").

The below-mentioned edition is based upon the complete autograph sketch for the piano (ÖNB Mus. Hs. 28.391).
