This prelude was composed in April 1877. Maybe, Hans Rott
was inspired by the Shakespearean play which had been performed
nine times at the Theater an der Wien between September 25
and October 5, 1875.
The finale of the prelude indicates that Rott possibly had
in mind to compose an opera; there exist, however, no drafts.

The work shows clear reminiscences of Wagner's
music, small wonder as Rott had attended the first Bayreuth
Festival in 1876. The prelude is not as path-breaking as the
Symphony No. 1 but it proves that Rott had been a very gifted
composer.
